Texas Health Orthopedic Surgery Center Heritage First in the Country to Receive Spine Surgery Certification

(January 14, 2025, Fort Worth, TX) – Texas Health Orthopedic Surgery Center Heritage, a joint venture ambulatory surgery center (ASC) between SCA Health, physicians at North Texas Orthopedics & Spine Center and United Musculoskeletal Partners, is the first ASC in the country to receive the Joint Commission on Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery accreditation.  This marks the third JCAHO accreditation for Texas Health Orthopedic Surgery Center Heritage, having obtained Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement earlier in 2024.

The Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery (ACSS) certification program helps health care organizations develop consistent communication and collaboration among all health care providers involved in the care of the patient, from the pre-surgical consultation with their spine surgeon to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ASC admission, rehabilitation activities and then the follow-up visit with the surgeon.

“The ACSS achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire staff,” said Michael Briseño, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at North Texas Orthopedics & Spine. “Being the first ASC in the country to complete this accreditation underscores our unwavering commitment to patient safety and improving patient outcomes for spinal surgery.”

The Advanced Certification for Spine Surgery (ACSS) was created in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), including a technical panel composed of clinical spine experts and leaders from the American Spine Registry. Four standardized measures were adopted by JCAHO with data collection beginning 120 days prior to certification as well as ongoing data collection following accreditation. The four measures are as follows:

  • Surgical Site Infection Rates
  • New Neurological Deficits
  • Unplanned Return Visit to the Operating Room
  • Preoperative and Postoperative Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs)

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess, and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
